Course Overview

Accurate and complete clinical documentation is an essential component of professional acupuncture practice. This course provides acupuncturists with practical knowledge and strategies for documenting clinical assessments, acupuncture treatments, medical necessity, and patient progress in accordance with applicable documentation and insurance requirements.

Participants will also explore the responsible use of AI-assisted charting tools to improve documentation efficiency, consistency, and accuracy.

Course Description

Smarter Acupuncture Documentation: Insurance Compliance & AI-Assisted Charting is a case-based course that helps acupuncturists produce insurance-compliant documentation with confidence and efficiency.

Through three complete cases — neck pain, low back pain, and headache — participants learn how to document clinical problems even when objective examinations are normal. Each case walks through symptom inquiry, functional assessment, objective examination, and clinical judgment, ending with a finished English chart note, with special attention to distinguishing patient-reported functional impairment from objective clinical signs.

The course then dissects CPT codes 97810, 97811, 97813, and 97814 through comparative treatment scenarios, showing exactly which documentation supports each billable unit, where common documentation gaps occur, and when billable units cannot be determined from the note alone.

Finally, participants watch a live, start-to-finish demonstration of AI-assisted charting: from the doctor’s brief handwritten notes to an AI-generated draft, through clinician review and revision, to a complete SOAP note — with clear guidance on accuracy, compliance, and professional responsibility when using AI tools.

Course Outcome: The purpose of this program is to equip acupuncturists with practical documentation skills that support medical necessity, correct CPT coding, and responsible use of AI-assisted charting tools.

Who Should Enroll: Licensed Acupuncturists: practitioners who bill insurance or plan to, and want documentation that supports reimbursement and withstands review. Acupuncture students and recent graduates: clinicians building charting habits from the start of practice.

Intended Audience: Licensed acupuncturists seeking to strengthen their clinical documentation knowledge and improve charting efficiency.

What You Will Learn

  1. Distinguish patient-reported functional impairment from objective clinical signs in clinical documentation.
  2. Document clinical problems with normal examination findings using a structured framework of symptom inquiry, functional assessment, objective examination, and clinical judgment.
  3. Produce complete, insurance-compliant English SOAP notes for neck pain, low back pain, and headache cases.
  4. Differentiate CPT codes 97810, 97811, 97813, and 97814, and identify the documentation required to support each billable unit.
  5. Identify common documentation gaps that leave acupuncture units unsupported or undeterminable from the clinical note.
  6. Describe a compliant AI-assisted charting workflow from brief clinical notes through AI drafting to clinician review and finalization.
  7. Apply clinician review and revision steps to AI-generated drafts to ensure accuracy and compliance before finalizing the SOAP note.

SMARTER ACUPUNCTURE DOCUMENTATION — COURSE WORKSHEET

Name: ____________________ Date: __________

PART 1 — Documenting with a normal exam

1. A neck-pain patient has normal cervical ROM and a normal neurological exam but reports being unable to work at a computer for more than 20 minutes. a. Write three functional-impairment questions you would ask this patient. b. List two findings that belong under Subjective and two that belong under Objective for this visit.

2. A low back pain patient reports VAS 6/10 and an Oswestry score of 32%. In two sentences, explain how these measures support medical necessity.

3. For a headache patient with a normal exam, list four elements of functional impact you would document.

PART 2 — CPT codes 97810–97814

4. Scenario A: 30 minutes of face-to-face non-electrical acupuncture, personally performed. Which codes and units apply?

5. Scenario B: A note reads “acupuncture with e-stim performed” with no time recorded. Which code applies, and what critical element is missing?

6. A note documents “acupuncture performed, 45 minutes” but never states whether electrical stimulation was used or how much was face-to-face time. Explain why the billable units cannot be determined from this note.

PART 3 — AI-assisted charting

7. List the four steps of the AI charting workflow demonstrated in the course, in order.

8. True or False: An AI-generated draft may be filed into the patient record without clinician review. Briefly explain your answer.
